Have you ever heard about a BIOS password? Do you know that you can also create a strong BIOS password for computer security, in addition to a strong Windows login password? In reality, most laptops come with a very strong BIOS password capability that locks up the hardware and makes the laptop completely unusable. It should be entered before the operating system loads, usually on a black screen a few seconds after the laptop is started. Therefore, a BIOS password is often said to be more secure than a traditional desktop to help protect the data if it was stolen.
How to create a BIOS password?
1. Start or restart your computer. When the BIOS screen comes on, press the “Delete” key to enter BIOS setup.
Note: “Del” is most common key for entering the BIOS. Some computers used “F12” or “F2”, and other keys. Once the appropriate key is pressed, the BIOS screen will come up.
2. Use the arrow keys to choose “Security” and press “Enter”. Supervisor Password and User Password will appear on the coming up window.
3. Use the arrow keys to move down and highlight “Set User Password and Press “Enter.” Enter the password in the password box and enter the password again in the confirm password box when an options window opens. Press “Enter” to set the password.
4. Use the arrow key to move down and highlight “Set Password Check” and press “Enter.” You’ll be presented with the options to invoke the password during “Setup” or “Always.” Choosing “Setup” requires a password to enter the BIOS. Choosing “Always” requires a password every time you start your computer. Highlight your choice and press “Enter.”
5. Press “Esc” one time, use the arrow key to select “Exit” and press “Enter.” The option “Save changes and exit” should already be highlighted. If not, use the arrow key to highlight it and press “Enter.” Your computer will exit the BIOS screen and reboot.
How to remove a forgotten BIOS password?
Since many users often forgot Windows password, there will be lots of users forgot the BIOS password if they set one without doubt. Now that a forgotten Windows login password can be easily reset by a password reset disk, or a Windows password reset tool, and so on, there exists many effective solutions to remove a forgotten BIOS password. Followings are some examples.
1. Remove BIOS battery. Removing the CMOS battery like the one shown in the picture to the right will cause the system to lose all CMOS settings including the password. Take the battery away for 15-30 minutes or more, and then put it back and the data contained into the BIOS memory should be volatilized.
2. Use a BIOS password utility. There are utilities designed to help bypass CMOS passwords. An example of a great utility to decrypt / bypass BIOS passwords is the PC BIOS Security and Maintenance toolkit.
3. Contact BIOS manufacturer. You can also consult your motherboard manual or consult the website of the BIOS manufacturer if you don’t have one.
